What is your core business and what are the IT support requirements?

There are two main aspects to our business: airplane interiors (manufacturing of seat covers and seat engineering) and flight support, which is a 24/7 operation that serves four airport around the UK.

The demand for IT support is fairly constant. In the whole group there are around 450 people and about 120 of them need IT to do their jobs. Because of the nature of flight support IT problems need to be sorted out rapidly as they can be mission critical. For the interiors side of the business office hours support is usually sufficient to keep things running smoothly.

We’ve been a client of Ziptech for about 3 years.  Before that we had an in house IT manager based on the Isle of Man (which is where the Flight Support side of the business is based).   We decided that it was better to fully outsource our IT and use Ziptech.

As a business we are of a size where we need IT support but we are not big enough to warrant a dedicated IT manager of our own. Ziptech provides us with the flexibility of on-call IT support, as well as the strategic side of planning our IT needs right down to the detail of sourcing and building new PCs.  It’s good to know they are there on call for us. Ziptech give us a more uniform, standard support that everybody can understand.

In the early days it’s true to say that we had reservations about moving to Ziptech because we felt that the people within Flight Support would be resistant to or uncomfortable with the new arrangement (having had their own IT manager on site).  But the Ziptech team visited all four sites to set up the Red Zeds on the PCs and it was good for them to actually meet the staff. I think that helped a lot.

Has there been a specific incident where Ziptech has dealt with something well?

We had issues with our email about a year ago and it was being supplied to us by a company on the Isle of Man. It was very expensive and the service wasn’t great.  So we engaged Ziptech to migrate email onto our own servers here. The majority of users didn’t know that they had been migrated from one server to another – they just continued to get emails.  Which is as it should be.

How has having Ziptech on board changed day to day operations?

Flight support has got over the hurdle of not having someone on site that they know very well. They’ve dealt very well with the transition to having their IT Support being handled remotely.

What have been the implications of outsourcing IT?

I think it’s a good arrangement. We pay a fixed amount each month. If we had an IT manager we could find there wasn’t enough work to keep him busy. Having support on call and having an SLA with Ziptech means there is a level of quality that we can expect from the contract.   We don’t have any staff issues and Ziptech are there when we need them.

Do you have any recommendations for companies in a similar situation to yourselves?

For companies of a similar size outsourcing is a very good solution.  It gives you the flexibility you need to scale up or scale back as required.  For example I’ve just been speaking with Rad about replacing 10 PCs. We wouldn’t have the internal resource to configure all of those but Ziptech does.  So the resource can be scaled up for that project and then drop back down again afterwards.

Would you recommend us?

Yes – we have a good working relationship with Jim and his team and it’s gone from strength to strength.  We can see the benefits of Ziptech and they have helped us stabilise our IT.  This is the first time we’ve been proactive about maintaining our stock of IT equipment. We have a programme of scheduled replacement and Rad has been very good at getting us some really competitive prices.
